Rotaract Club Establishes Permanent 9/11 Memorial

START — The Rotary Interact Club in Clinton, Missouri, was instrumental in establishing a permanent, 9/11 Memorial on the Henryu County Courthouse Square. The Memorial was unveiled in a community ceremony today. (I was there, and they had a great turn out. Probably 400 people or so.)

The monument was initiated by student-led groups START, Rotary’s Interact program with the assistance of the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) and their adult advisors.

START President (at the time) Bethany VanWinkle contacted the September 11th Families Association last year and requested a section of steel from the twin towers to be used as a centerpiece for the monument. The 39 inch tall section of steel girder features a pronounced bend – signifying that the will of America might be challenged at times, but it will never be broken. A handsome marble backdrop features the American flag and depicitions of the three 9/11 impact sites. (See attached photo).

It makes me proud to be part of an organization that encourages youth to make such a thoughtful and proud statement. Once more, I am proud to be a rotarian.

I think the radio station in Clinton, KDKD will be posting pictures from the memorial service on their web site tonight so more photos may follow.
