Six Rotary Clubs in Columbia come together to fund new playground

All six Columbia Rotary Clubs worked together to raise $51,000 for the Clary-Shy Community Park project in Columbia. Rotary Club representatives presented the check to the Columbia City Council on Monday, Dec. 17. The check will help fund the park’s new farm-themed playground. The playground will be built in the existing Clary-Shy Park, a 20-acre area located between West Ash Street and Clinkscales Road that has previously housed the Columbia Farmers Market. The playground is part of a larger master plan, which will include a pavilion for the farmer’s market and amphitheater. Mike Griggs, director of the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department, first received the idea for a playground in an email from Jan Grossmann, president of Columbia Rotary South, 14 months ago. As of December, $2.9 million has been collected for the park in donations and grants, Griggs said. “It is such a tremendous asset to have those guys here in town,” he said. Grossmann said the collaboration between the six clubs has been a positive experience. “It’s the first time all six of the clubs have joined together in partnership to do some kind of a local project that would benefit the community,” Grossmann said. Rotarians said they hope to have the playground completed by March 2019.

We sell the 4.5- 5-pound roasts freshly smoked, chilled or frozen through our local meat processor Alewel’s Meats. They provide the roasts at their cost and we sell them for $25 each. We always have good return customers, so it’s not re-inventing the customer list each year. We net $5,000 to $6,000 for special projects in the community. We also do a catfish fry dinner at one of our area wineries. It’s a good community interaction/social, but nets only $1,500 to $2,500, so we’re thinking about making it a meal delivery opportunity on a work day. It will lose the social aspect, but it may sell more meals. We’ll see what the committee decides. The Warrensburg Early-Birds has the KING fundraiser in our county — The Taste of Johnson County — in which area restaurants showcase their cuisine. Tickets are $12 or $15 and the restaurants take on the food costs. They usually bring in $10,00 to $13,000.

Rotary Kids Week At Wonderland Camp – July 29 – August 2, 2019

Our Rotary District 6080 Partnership with Wonderland Camp is expanding to include “Rotary Kids Week At Wonderland Camp”. Kids with disabilities, ages 7-17 will be sponsored by Rotarians, Rotary Clubs and private donors, to attend Camp “free of charge”. Sponsorships can include: full at $1,000.00, or partial with any amount appreciated. Specific kids can be named, sponsored and registered or sponsorship can be for any qualified kid to attend. Contact the coordinators to learn more about “Rotary Kids Week” and other opportunities of service to benefit people, especially kids, with mental and physical challenges.

Rotary Club of Springfield North Partners With Dream Center

The Dream Center is a community resource center in northwest Springfield, an area of the highest poverty and greatest need of assistance. Resources include a food pantry, clothes closet, a free after-school program for area children, high school equivalency classes to assist those attempting to get their GED, a community dinner every Wednesday evening, a host site for the local Circles Program that teaches financial literacy classes and provides mentors for the families, and parenting classes, to only mention a few. The Rotary Club of Springfield North has partnered with the Dream Center on several projects to enhance the delivery of those services to the community. The most recent project was to provide much-needed video equipment for the Circles education center. Prior to this project, they did not have the equipment needed to show financial educational videos as part of their financial education classes. The equipment provided was a 65-inch “smart” television, a laptop computer, a Blu-ray DVD player, an Apple TV that allows wireless connection between the laptop and television, a sound bar to enhance the audio, two dry-erase boards, a wireless mouse, pointer, and all the required cables. Only time will tell the number of individuals and families whose lives will be improved through the enhanced educational opportunities provided by this equipment. A portion of the funding for this project came from a District Simplified Grant from Rotary District 6080 with matching funds from the Rotary North Club. The Rotary Club of Springfield will have a $12,000 impact on Eden Village in Springfield thanks to a $6,000 District Simplified Grant which the club matched this summer. The funds helped furnish the village’s community room that can be shared by all village residents and staff. Mayor Carrie Tergin welcomed the attendees to the New Teachers Welcome Luncheon. Jefferson City Public Schools Superintendent Larry Linthacum introduced the new teachers. 2018-19 Teacher of the Year, Jana Forck, spoke to the attendees about her experiences as a teacher and offered some practical advice to the new teachers. Ms. Forck’s comments were uplifting and inspiring. One quote Ms. Forck shared was “The benefit to losing is you get to learn from your mistakes.” Rotary Club of Jefferson City members Alice Bartlett, Christine Ellinger; Julie Allen and 6080 Assistant District Governor Pat Hiatte worked on the event. The greeters at the New Teachers Welcome Luncheon were Rotary Club of Jefferson City members Nick Monaco and Paul Jungmeyer. The Rotary Club Local Foundation, Pam Henrickson, President, provided financial sponsorship of the event. Brown Printing contributed the printing of the program. The New Teachers Welcome Luncheon sponsored by the Rotary Club of Jefferson City and the Rotary Club Local Foundation appeared in a local newspaper, the News Tribune, in Jefferson City Missouri.

All of this was made possible by due support from the community and those businesses that helped with our fundraisers throughout the year. We want to say “thank you” to all of the people and businesses that supported the camp in 2017 on February 17, 2018 in Eldon. I am proud to inform you and your club that the Third Panama Project is underway. The process for this last project began 3 years ago when your club made a generous contribution as did 8 other clubs in the District and together we were able to raise $20,259.00. We applied for a global grant and together with RI and District 6080 we received a grant total of $71,259.00. AWESOME!
