SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The first woman from the U.S. to be selected as Rotary International president spoke at a training conference Friday in Springfield.

This talk is part of the Show Me Rotary Leadership Institute event at the University Plaza Hotel.

The Rotary Club is best known for its efforts to eradicate polio and help combat other diseases, provide clean water, support education and more.

Dr. Stephanie Urchick is the club’s second female president and the first woman from the U.S. During the event, she spoke in front of about 300 Rotarians and guests.

“I’m hoping that we can strengthen our membership and grow, especially in North America,” said Dr. Urchick. “Membership is crucial to me, and I also think that we have some unique tools in the rotary that can help promote peace. We are a peacebuilding organization.”

There are more than 150 rotary clubs and about 6,000 members in the state of Missouri. This is just a small fraction of the 1.4 million members in 46,000 clubs across 200 countries.
