The “Don’t Meth With Us” campaign conducted by Rotary clubs in Southwest Missouri are having a positive impact amongst the youth in the region. That was exemplified by the recent discovery of a meth jar, discovered and reported by a diligent 13-year old girl. Springfield’s television station KSPR filed this report.
Columbia Metro Rotary is sponsoring a Trivia Night Dinner Buffet, February 1st, to benefit the Seniors Matter Fund and other community projects. Rotarians from throughout the area are welcomed to join in, helping Columbia Metro Rotary to make a positive impact in the region.
Of all the philanthropic organizations in the world, Rotary International took second place in the Ten Million Charity Miles Giveaway offered by United Airlines during the month of December. The successful campaign, spurred on by thousands of Rotarians worldwide, will allow for thousands of miles of airline travel over the coming year which will facilitate humanitarian projects and stretch finite budgets to allow Rotary to do more good work.
Happy New Year to everyone in our District…from Centralia to Mammoth Spring/Thayer, and from Warrensburg to Salem…and all clubs in between. Every time I mention those boundaries, I’m reminded of the significant responsibility our District shoulders. Rotary clubs are typically the go-to organization in our communities when it comes to helping our neighbors in need. Now, take that position and add it to the boundaries I just mentioned. This makes us the service clubs that communities far and wide look to for assistance and support. That is an amazing responsibility…one we should never take likely.
I am proud to have the privilege to introduce to you our District Governor Nominee, Mike Beahon; though Mike has been visiting so many clubs and attending so many Rotary special events over the past year, most of you probably already know him.
RI President Sakuji Tanaka will be in personal attendance at a Peace Forum to be held in the continental U.S. March 9, 2013. District 6780 and the three Rotary clubs in Oak Ridge, Tennessee are sponsoring the event, that will focus upon Peace through Service, Peace through science and technology and Peace through human understanding.
The application period is now open for Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships for the 2014-15 academic year. The scholarship program selection and funding criteria change slightly under the New Visions paradigm, but the program will still allow for a full-ride scholarship for one year’s, advanced study in an accredited academic institution in another country.
Further violence interrupted the polio vaccination process in parts of Pakistan last week, but the Pakistani government still plans to persevere in the effort to eradicate polio.
Yesterday, six vaccination workers, all women, were gunned down in Pakistan due to their involvement in the polio eradication effort.
