LIGHT UP RWANDA
Wine tasting and hors d’ oeuvres 5:30-9 p.m. Sir Winston’s
Meet African students and hear their stories
Come to our Wine Tasting Fundraiser and support Humanity for Children’s Bright Light Campaign to provide solar lights to school children in Rwanda.
Our goal is to pilot this concept in one primary school and one secondary school … this would be around 200 solar study lights like the one at the right ($15 each = $3,000) … a great return on investment. More money means more lights.
THE CHALLENGE:
Young students growing up in remote areas in the developing world are not able to read or study at night because
- There is no electricity at their house or village;
- After school when the sun does shine is usually filled with walking to get water (sometimes miles), gathering firewood, caring for children, working in the garden, etc., and when they do go inside, there is no light;
- The only source of light at night is either a candle or kerosene lamp (costly and the fumes are dangerous).
